Best Labor Day Mattress Deals, Sales & Discounts

Labor Day is one of the best times of the year to buy a new mattress. Not only do brick and mortar retailers like Sears, Mattress Firm, and Macy’s run big promotions, but pretty much all other online mattress and bed-in-a-box brands do as well. That means you can expect to save big on brands like Casper, Leesa, and GhostBed, for example.

When Do Labor Day Mattress Sales Start?

You don’t have to wait until Labor Day to snag discounts. Most retailers and online mattress brands start their big promotions about a week ahead of time. That gives you plenty of time to research and figure out which mattress is best for your particular sleeping habits.

Don’t worry, if you have plans over Labor Day weekend or you simply just forget about all the mattress sales going on, you’ll still have time to take advantage of the discounts even after Labor Day has passed. Most online companies will continue to offer sales and promo codes for an additional 4-5 days. We’ve found some brands even extend their Labor Day sales for about 7-10 days post-Labor Day.

Do I Need A Labor Day Coupon Code Or Discount Code?

Yes and no. Some brands require you to enter in a special Labor Day promo code and others do not. If you need to enter in a code, it’s usually done within the checkout page of the brand’s website. All you have to do is add the mattress of your choice to your cart and hit checkout. Sometimes you do not need a code, though. Some companies automatically apply their Labor Day discount for you once you hit checkout.

Beware: Some Mattress Discounts Can Be Deceptive

Not all mattress deals are created equal. Just because a company promotes $500 off a particular mattress does not necessarily mean it’s a good deal. Sometimes retailers and online mattress brands employ marketing tools and tricks to make their promotions seem better than they truly are.

For example, one such trick these companies use is called “anchoring.” Basically, all this means is that companies will temporarily jack up the MSRP of their mattresses around major holidays and then slash them back down to their original prices to make it seem like you’re getting a killer deal.

After reading that, you might be asking, “well, how do I know what’s a good deal and what’s not”? Here’s what you can do. Once you decide which bed you want, be sure to check out our mattress reviews. In every review we include a price section that discusses what the typical MSRP price is and what sort of discount you can expect to receive. By reading this section, you’ll then know if the mattress brand you’re interested in is playing any games.

Always Read The Fine Print

Sometimes a company will advertise a huge discount, but there are strings attached. For example, sometimes you’ll see a company promote a big $300 off promotion, but really that’s only if your cart exceeds a certain dollar amount. In other words, you’ll get $300 off if you spend $2,000, which basically means you’ll have to buy a mattress, a pillow, and a bed frame in order to get the discount. Most companies are straight shooters. However, it’s always a good idea to dig into the fine print before purchasing.

Online vs. In-Store? Which Is Better?

This is a question that consumers face on a daily basis in today’s day and age regardless of which type of product you’re shopping for. Online shopping and e-commerce, in general, have become more and more prevalent over the last decade. There’s no denying that. This trend towards online shopping has made its way to the mattress industry as well. Online retailers and bed-in-a-box companies offer extremely friendly customer policies. However, not all consumers (especially older ones) are aware of just how these policies work.

For example, a common misconception about the bed-in-a-box industry relates to the whole “try before you buy” adage. Historically, most people are used to visiting their local mattress store to test beds and would never in a million years buy a mattress unseen. However, to combat this pattern of thinking, online mattress companies offer risk-free trial periods. Basically, they allow you to test the bed in the comfort of your own home for an extended period of time (usually three months) and decide whether you like it or not. If you decide the mattress isn’t for you, no worries, returns are typically free, and the company handles the entire removal process. We discuss trial periods more in more detail below.

Additionally, we’ve found that prices of bed-in-a-box and online direct-to-consumer (DTC) mattresses tend to be a little cheaper than the beds you find in your local mattress store. After all, it’s a lot cheaper to operate an internet business and not have to worry about all the overhead associated with running a network of brick n’ mortar retail stores. Accordingly, DTC mattress companies have a lot more wiggle room when it comes to price, and they are able to pass along savings to end consumers.

Lastly, there’s something to be said about just the pure convenience of ordering online. You don’t need to drive anywhere, and there’s no annoying salesperson hovering around you trying to up-sell you on adjustable bases, pillows, or comforters. Instead, you can literally conduct all the research you want from the comfort of your own home (or bed, for that matter) and still be able to test the bed risk-free thanks to the trial periods mentioned above. Plus, your local mattress store is likely to be jammed pack around Labor Day anyways.

Now we might be a little biased considering we’ve made reviewing online mattresses our job, but we think it’s more advantageous to buy a bed online these days, given the points above. However, we understand why some people may still prefer to shop in-store.

What To Consider When Researching Mattresses

There are a multitude of factors that are important when shopping for a new mattress. Below, we give a quick overview of these factors, but we’d recommend you check out our Mattress Buyer Guide for the full details.

Construction – There are several different types of mattresses out there. There are innerspring beds, hybrid beds, and all-foam beds. All three have their own distinct advantages and disadvantages.

Feel – This really comes down to personal preference. Beds come in a variety of feels. For example, some beds have a memory foam feel, some have a latex foam feel, and some have more of a mixed, neutral-foam feel.

Firmness And Sleeper Type – The position in which you sleep is very important in determining which particular bed is best for you. Generally speaking, side sleepers will prefer softer mattresses, while back and stomach sleepers will prefer firmer beds.

Body Type – Your weight affects how you perceive a mattress to feel. Heavy sleepers will feel like most mattresses are on the soft side since they sink into the top layers more. Lighter sleepers, on the other hand, will feel like most beds are on the firm side since they exert very little pressure on the top layers of the mattress. We generally recommend heavy sleepers go with hybrid or innerspring beds for maximum support and durability.

Temperature Regulation – Hot sleepers or consumers who live in an especially warm climate will likely want to focus on mattresses that provide cooling or airflow benefits. For example, some online bed-in-a-box mattresses contain special textiles in the cover that make the surface of the bed cool-to-the-touch.

Responsiveness – This relates to how quickly a mattress and its top layers snap back to position after pressure is released off the bed. Typically, active sleepers who move around and switch positions a lot will find it easier to maneuver on responsive mattresses.

Motion Isolation – The better a bed is at isolating motion, the less you’ll feel your partner’s movement’s throughout the night. No one wants to be jostled awake every time their partner gets up to get a glass of water or switch sleeping positions.

Edge Support – A bed with solid edge support will allow you and your partner to spread out and get comfortable without feeling like you’re about to roll off the side. In other words, beds with good edge support provide more useful surface area for both partners.

How Does Shipping And Returns Work With Online Mattresses?

Pretty much all online mattresses come with free shipping. However, the method by which they arrive can differ. Some beds arrive compressed in a box, some arrived rolled up in a protective bag, and some come white glove delivery. The latter means an actual delivery crew will come to your home and set up the mattress for you. Sometimes the delivery crew will even haul away your old mattress for free as well.

As mentioned above, most online beds come with some risk-free trial period. Again, this is how bed-in-a-box companies get around not having thousands of retail stores. Instead, they allow you to test the bed in your own home and decide whether you want to keep it. The industry standard for trial periods is 100 nights. However, there are a few companies out there that go above and beyond that. For example, the popular online brand DreamCloud offers a 365 night trial period.

If, during the trial period, you decide you want to return the mattress, the process is very simple. All you have to do is contact the respective company’s customer support department, and they’ll schedule for the mattress to be picked up from your home (typically for free). Once that happens, just provide proof (i.e., a pick-up receipt) that the bed has indeed been removed from your home, and the company will issue you a full refund.

All in all, you can start to see why buying a bed online has become so popular. Would you rather test a bed in the confines of your own home for three months or for two minutes in a crowded retail store? I know which route I’d pick.

Do Online Beds Come With A Warranty?

Yes, don’t worry. Online beds come with a warranty, just like beds you purchase in-store. The industry-standard warranty is 10 years. Typically, this covers indentations (body impressions) greater than one inch, any physical flaws in the foam (crack or split), and any manufacturing defects related to the cover, among other things.

Like with the trial period, some companies go above and beyond the industry standard warranty, though. For example, Puffy offers a lifetime warranty on their mattresses. It’s always a good idea to read the full details about each bed’s warranty before purchasing though.

How To Care For Online Mattresses

Most online beds come with a removable cover. However, it’s usually recommended you do not machine wash them. We’ve only run across a few beds that have removable covers that are also machine washable. A couple that come to mind include Yogabed and Novosbed.

Instead, if the mattress happens to get dirty or you have an accident, you should just spot clean the cover with a mild detergent and some water. Just simply sprinkle the dirty area with a little detergent and then proceed to gently rub and blot the spot with a damp washcloth.

Labor Day Mattress Shopping Verdict

Hopefully, this Labor Day mattress guide has been helpful. Bottom line, this is one of the best times of the year to buy a new mattress. Chances are you can snag a big discount on some of the most popular mattresses on the market.

However, with that said, it pays to do a little due diligence. Never blindly accept the marketing rhetoric these mattresses companies and retailers promote. Do a little bit of research on your own and figure out which beds best suit your particular sleeping habits, and then from there, determine just how good of a deal it truly is.
