Who Is It Best For? Petite to heavy sleepers People open to an unconventional foam and gel hybrid mattress All sleeping positions (side, back, stomach, and combination) Luxury mattress shoppers Who Won’t Love It? Budget shoppers Sleepers interested in a plain ol’ foam mattress
Intellibed is a science-backed mattress brand that focuses on being a health and wellness company, not just a mattress manufacturer. As you’ve probably already noticed after browsing through the Intellibed mattress models, they are a luxury bedding brand, and their beds don’t come cheap. Though, if you’re willing to invest in an Intellibed mattress like the Grand Matrix (the one we’re focused on here), you might be happy with the quality of sleep you’re getting. Especially on the Grand Matrix, the brand’s top-tier model in their Signature line. Here are the bed’s major highlights for a TLDR:
- The Intellibed Grand Matrix mattress utilizes a unique gel-like material, combined with a more traditional pillow top for an unconventional but very comfortable feel.
- Ideal for all sleeping positions (side, back, stomach, and combination).
- Thick, durable hybrid construction, which makes it good for all body types.
In our Grand Matrix mattress review, we reveal the types of sleepers we imagine on this bed and who might not love it all that much—interested to know if it’ll work for you? Keep reading below.

Intellibed Grand Matrix Mattress Construction
The Intellibed mattress is unlike any other mattress out there, and a lot of it has to do with its construction. Not only is it 17” thick, but several layers are made with their special Gel Matrix. It’s a gel-like material similar to Purple mattress’ Hyper-Elastic Polymer, and we think it’s super comfortable. Here’s a breakdown of the inside starting from the bottom:
- Zoned steel coils in the base layer provide a bulk of the bed’s support.
- A porous foam layer with an open-cell design, allowing the passage of airflow.
- The first Gel Matrix layer that’s 2 ½” thick for pressure relief and support.
- A thin foam layer that neutralizes the gel-like feel and adds a bit more comfort
- A 1 ¼” thick layer of the Gel Matrix material, again, for both pressure relief and support.
- A thin layer of Talalay latex foam that is breathable, bouncy, durable, and contouring around your curves.
- Energex foam infused with titanium that feels pressure relieving and helps regulate temperature.
- Quilted cover that gives the bed a luxury look and an even more comfortable feel.
Durability
A bed’s durability is typically reliant on its thickness and the quality of the materials used. As you can see, this is one big mattress, and they use a myriad of different bedding materials, including foam and steel coils. If support and durability are something you value, Intellibed offers just that.
Mattress Pricing
You know the saying you get what you pay for? This definitely rings true for Intellibed. We don’t want to beat around the bush, it’s obvious that this is an incredibly expensive mattress and won’t fit in everyone’s budget. It’s not for your run-of-the-mill mattress shopper. Instead, the audience for this bed has to have the disposable income to drop thousands of dollars. A queen size Grand Matrix mattress retails around $7,000 — one of the most pricey beds we’ve ever tested here.
Grand Matrix Mattress Firmness And Feel
What does it feel like?
You might be wondering, what exactly does a mattress made with gel feel like? It’s certainly unique and unlike most beds out there except for Purple, who also utilizes a proprietary, gel-like material. The gel itself is squishy, like a little rubber toy or a Dr. Scholl’s insole.
Paired with the top foam layers and a quilted top, we think this bed feels responsive and incredibly light. What we mean by that is you almost feel like you’re floating when you’re on it, and it won’t give you that “stuck” feel that memory foam does.

Firmness
On our scale from one to 10, with 10 being the firmest, we rate this bed right in the middle, around a five. It offers ample pressure relief while remaining very supportive. It’s not too firm, nor is it too soft. Instead, it’s at that sweet spot right in the middle of the spectrum.
Pressure relief
Soft beds typically have the best pressure relief, but we think this bed offers nice pressure relief to almost all sleepers. That’s especially true if you weigh over 230 lbs. We think this bed contours around pressure points like your hips and shoulders, and it keeps your back properly supported.
Sleeper Type Analysis
Think back to when you woke up this morning—which position was it in? Are there one or two sleeping positions you prefer? We ask because your sleeper type should help you determine whether or not a mattress is or isn’t right for you.
Body Type Analysis
Your body type and BMI also plays a role in how suitable a mattress will be. We always recommend hybrid beds to heavier individuals because they’re more supportive, while petite to average sleepers can opt for an all-foam or hybrid mattress.
Intellibed Grand Matrix Mattress Performance
Aside from firmness, feel, and construction, here are our thoughts on the bed’s remaining characteristics.

Temperature
Thanks to the grid-like design of the Gel Matrix layers, this bed offers up a ton of airflow. Combined with the titanium-infused and open-celled foam layers for even more breathability, this bed is temperature regulating. It doesn’t necessarily sleep cold, but we think it’s good at keeping you from warming up.
Motion Isolation
This refers to how well a bed deadens movement. This is more important to the people who share a bed with a significant other who tends to move around a lot. We think The Grand Matrix mattress is great at motion isolation, and you shouldn’t be bothered by your partner waking up in the middle of the night.
Edge Support
Edge support refers to the strength of the bed’s edges, so you don’t feel like you’re going to fall off when you’re pushed to the side. If you share a full or queen size bed with a partner, this one’s for you! When we lay down on the edge of the Intellibed Grand Matrix, we feel properly supported and comfortable. This could partly be due to the fact that the bed uses zoned coils specifically designed to give you support where you need it most.
Grand Matrix Mattress Verdict
You’ve made it to the end of the mattress review, and you’re wondering whether or not you should pull the trigger on the Grand Matrix bed. If you have the money to spend over $5,000 on a new bed, you likely won’t be disappointed with this.
Our favorite parts about this mattress:
- It’s extremely thick and durable, and we think it’ll last you a long time, unlike a thin foam mattress.
- It’s very accommodating, as it’s supportive enough for any body type and comfortable enough for any sleeping position.
- The feel is very unique. You get a traditional bed feel from the comfy quilted top, but the Gel Matrix in the bed makes it feel more weightless, bouncy, and pressure relieving.
What to consider:
- It’s extremely pricey, especially compared to your average bed-in-a-box mattress.
- Sleepers under 150 lbs. might not love this bed because it’s so thick and supportive. It may be a little bit overkill.
